INTERACTIONAL STRATEGIES IN TOPIC DEVELOPMENT

Theories of interaction argue that people must agree on basic beliefs or break up their relationship. Participation in any contact with others is a commitment. Conversation is a joint production of its participants. One speaker initiates the talk, and the other speaker adds up to it participating in forming the conversational structure. Since the unity of language, situation and knowledge has been recognized by linguists, modern linguistics focuses mainly on the discourse analysis: that describes how conversation between people is organized; what makes it coherent and understandable; how people introduce and change the topics; how they interrupt, ask questions, give or evade answers and, in general, how the conversation flow is maintained or disrupted. In order to communicate successfully people should try to solve problems together, that is to cooperate towards mutual communicative ends. However sometimes people do not want to cooperate with their interlocutors in problem solving, in other words they refuse to collaborate in topic development. The paper will focus on major strategies people use to maintain or disrupt a conversation.

A modernistic text has always attracted everybody’s attention by its enormous number of linguistic techniques, which were used for its writing. Modernistic texts are considered to be experiments which break all possible traditions. Chaos, created by J. Joyce in “Ulysses”, is the manifestation of the author’s boundless abilities and his unwillingness to stick to a certain style. He uses different linguistic means and styles in his writing. Such an approach helps the author to reveal the internal freedom of his characters who have a psychological ability to make their free choices. The sensation of the internal freedom is not the only ground of existence for the characters of the novel, but for the author himself.

The analysis of professional discourse in small groups of managers of various companies shows the corporate discourse role structure and corporate identity are always reproduced in the roles of Corporate Leader and Corporate Subordinate. Corporate Leader is not a leader in its common bureaucratic meaning because he doesn't linguistically rise above subordinates. He is more a coordinator of group actions, he is the person the group needs, but possesses his status in the group until the group wants it. This paper touches upon some aspects of the development of the conceptual picture of the world in a man’s consciousness. Cognitive linguistics suggests that all the phenomena in our everyday life are reflected in the form of various mental representations in people’s minds. They are structured and formed into the elements of a person’s picture of the world, for example, into concepts and frames. The paper also considers the question of frame and concept’s correlation as key notions of cognitive linguistics and presents the description of the experiment of structuring the concept “school” with the help of a frame.

Action vs. Emotion: Gender Aspects of Menacive Patterns

A menacive is an act of verbal aggression aimed at changing Hearer’s course of action through a prospect of intentional harm. Sociopragmatic factor gender influences Speaker’s menacive patterns. The paper focuses on verbal means employed by male and female Speakers for formulating an explicit threat and intensifying it; for making an implicit threat and lessening its effect on Hearer. We analyze in what communicative situations a menacive is commonly found in each gender group, what menacive patterns are favored by men and women, and to what extent gender may define Speaker’s choice of menacives.

This article gives an insight into the ethic concepts of Faithfulness and Betrayal on the level of their verbal representation. Basing on the assumption that the word is a key to the concept we analyzed the lexical units which carry out the verbal realization of the given concepts and finally concluded that their lexical compatibility is mainly determined by their figurative representation. We managed to detect the following metaphoric characteristics of the concepts of Faithfulness and Betrayal: anthropomorphous, artifact, zoomorphous, vegetative, theomorphous and other characteristics.

The acceptance of the hierarchical structure of relations between people has been a characteristic feature of the Chinese society: social status and position may be more important than what a person does. The hierarchy is built on the basis of one’s social position, power, profession, welfare, age and sex. In the hierarchical structure of society a woman had a lower place and obeyed a man. From young age she was taught that feminine yin was dark (negative) and masculine yang was light (positive). The present research is based on the examples from the books by the American authors of Chinese origin and focuses on the non-verbal means of communication used to express hierarchical inequality of men and women.

Nowadays studying any aspect of speech is impossible without referring to cognitive mechanisms of perception, storage, processing and transmission of linguistic images in the process of speech perception and production. This kind of methodology is basically anthropocentric, because it is based on investigating the questions of the relationship between language and human consciousness, language and higher cognitive operations, the role of language in the process of learning about the world, etc. The productivity of cognitive research in phonology is in no doubt, as it allows to overcome the limitations imposed by the requirements of the structural approach to the study of the language, and to reach the level of intercode sound transition modeling in the process of communication between people. From the standpoint of cognitive phonology we can also understand the sound system of the language as a key to its semantics: because in the linguistic consciousness of the individual ideal sound and meaning are in interrelationships - the meaning determines the sound image and sound image defines the meaning, any significant change of sound body of the language sign entails a change in semantics.

In a globalized world Business English training should prepare students to function professionally in English. Traditionally Business English course addresses such issues as vocabulary and topics used in the worlds of business, trade, finance, international relations. It focuses on the language skills needed for typical business communication such as presentations, negotiations, meetings, small talk, socializing, business correspondence, report writing. However, these English language skills have no value for our students if they are not applied in the appropriate cross-cultural manner. Understanding cultural differences is crucial for successful communication across cultures. It promotes clearer communication, breaks down barriers, builds trust, strengthens relationships, opens business opportunities. In this paper we discuss ways of building cultural awareness in the BE classroom and suggest activities to help students avoid cultural gaffes and overcome cultural stereotypes.

Comparative Approach to Chinese Adjectives Study
