Komsomolsk-on-Amur is a large industrial, scientific and cultural center not only of the Khabarovsk Krai, but the whole of the Far East. Оn January 1, 2016 population of the city amounted to 251 283 person. It is the second largest city of Khabarovsk Krai, and the fourth - in the Far East. Climatic background is unfavorable for the dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere. Especially unfavorable conditions are formed in the winter, when the potential pollution of the atmosphere is increased compared with the summer of almost 1.5 times. City: Komsomolsk-on-Amur to 2011 was among the 35 most polluted cities in Russia, ranking in this list 22nd place, and a number of indicators coming out to the first position. Over the last decade (1982 -. 2015) there was a decrease of pollutant emissions from industrial plants. However, this is due not so much to the improvement of working gas and dust removal facilities, as the reduction in production volumes. Since 2009, a gradual increase in pollutant emissions into the atmosphere of the city and it is directly related to the economic recovery (industrial output rose in three times). The main pollutants of air pollution in the city are the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, gas, steam and hot water, and transport.

The main river is the territory Amur. The width of the main channel of the river near the town of Amursk is 1.2 km, maximum depth - 12.0 m, the rate of water flow of 3.0 - 4.5 m / s. Most of the lakes in the Amur area - floodplain lakes, small in size (less than 1 km²). In the north-eastern part of the largest lake the area - Lake. Bolon, whose catchment area is 12,500 km², the water surface area - 338 km². Under the terms of the area of the river belong to the Far East power supply type. The share of rain power in total annual runoff of 60-85%, the snow supply - 5-20%, underground - 10-20%. Groundwater Mid-Amur artesian basin are of great importance for the water supply the area. The share of groundwater in the balance of economic-drinking water supply of the Amur the area is 32% in urban settlements and in the workers' settlements - 22%, in the small rural localities - 100%. The water in the Amur River is heavily polluted enough variety of substances. Amur river water can’t be used without purification as not only drinking water but also for industrial purposes. This situation necessitates the increased use of water from underground sources, and in the future - the translation supply major population centers on groundwater sources.
