HIGH EFFICIENCY OF THE GRAIN MARKET IN THE POST-CRISIS DEVELOPMENT OF AGRIBUSINESS

In article priorities of effective functioning of grain market in the conditions of post-crisis development of agro-industrial complex economy of Russia are considered. Dynamic changes of outputs of agricultural production in the Orel region are presented, influence of production factors on results of economic activity is investigated. The role of state regulation, financial support and agricultural insurance in further forward development of the highly effective market of grain of the region is proved.

ADAPTIVE CAPACITIES OF FARMERS TO CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION STRATEGIES AND THEIR EFFECTS ON RICE PRODUCTION IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF GHANA

This study estimated the adaptive capacities of farmers to climate change adaptation strategies and their effects on rice production in the Northern Region of Ghana. The adaptive capacities of rice farmers were estimated quantitatively and categorized into high, moderate and low adaptive capacities. Double logarithmic regression model of Cobb-Douglas production function was used to quantity the effects of adaptive capacities of farmers on rice production. On the average, the farmers interviewed are moderately adaptive to climate change. Also, high adaptive farmers obtain nine more bags of 50 kg bag of paddy rice than farmers with low adaptive capacities. Therefore, the more a farmer has the ability to adjust to climate change, the more the number of bags of rice he or she obtains. Rice farmers should be empowered through better extension services in order to attain high adaptive capacity status so as to help them obtain more rice output.

ECONOMICS AND SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF REGISTERED POULTRY EGG PRODUCERS IN ILORIN, KWARA STATE

The paper analyzed the economics and social characteristics of registered poultry egg producers in Ilorin, Kwara State. Primary data was used for the study. The data was collected using structured questionnaires administered to 150 stratified sampled registered poultry egg producer. Both descriptive and gross margin analysis were employed to analyze the data. Socio-economic analyses revealed that 68.7% of the poultry egg farmers were males with a mean age of 40 years and 78% having tertiary education with a mean year of poultry experience of 7years. 76.7% were married with a mean family size of 4. Majority (53.3%) of the farmers were civil servant with a mean farm size of 334 number of birds and 50% of the farmers have been participating in cooperative society for over 6 to 10 years with majority (84.7%) having no extension contact. The gross margin calculated shows that the farms had an average margin of N3,652 per bird per year and the net average revenue of N3,024 per bird per year showing that poultry egg production is profitable. It was recommended that government should endeavour to subsidize inputs such as feed ingredients and this can be achieved through poultry farmer's participation in crop production.

Zimbabwe is basically endowed in agricultural resources. As a result agricultural activities have a large bearing on developmental issues in the country. Employment is one such economic issue that hinges much on agricultural development. Over the past decade employment levels have reduced as a result of low investment in the country. Masvingo Province has not been spared. This scenario has seen many youths being out of employment as the sector employed less labour. The study found out that economic woes that Zimbabwe experienced over the past half decade have contributed significantly to youth unemployment in agriculture in Masvingo Province as a result of low investment in the sector. The study recommends that heavy investment be put in agriculture and agriculture related projects to enhance employment levels of the Zimbabwean youths in Masvingo province.

A BOOTSTRAP APPROACH TO TESTING FOR SYMMETRY IN THE GRANGER AND LEE ASYMMETRIC ERROR CORRECTION MODEL

The power of the Granger and Lee (1989) model of asymmetry is examined via bootstrap simulation. The results of the bootstrap simulation indicate that the Granger and Lee model has low power in rejecting the null hypothesis of symmetric adjustments. The power of the test depends on the bootstrap sample size, difference in adjustment speeds and the amount of noise in the data generating process used in the application. With a small bootstrap sample and large noise level the Granger and Lee model display low power in rejecting the null hypothesis of symmetry.
