INHERITABLE DESTABILIZATION OF SEVERAL PHENOTYPIC CHARACTERS IN AMOEBAE AND CILIATES

In the course of many years of genetic research conducted by various researchers of amoebae Amoeba proteus and ciliates Dileptus anser, a particular type of hereditary variation called instability of traits has been described. The new previously unnoticed ability of the known antibiotic actinomycin D to induce this type of hereditary variability in these protists was revealed. For a number of features, this variability can be considered epigenetic, not caused by any mutation in DNA. Therefore, actinomycin D can be viewed as an inducer of the inherited changes of epigenetic nature, i.e. «epimutagen».

The article provides characteristics of seven new isolates of monoxenous trypanosomatid Crithidia brevicula, which were isolated from the hindgut of Brachyceran flies in the northern regions of Russia. Comparison of the SSU rRNA gene sequences and subsequent phylogenetic analysis based on this marker have demonstrated that new isolates form a reliable cluster with other isolates of C. brevicula from Hemipteran and Nematoceran insects.

A NEW TESTATE AMOEBAE SPECIES CENTROPYXIS CAVITASTOMA SP. NOV. ON DEPOSITS OF VOLCANIC DUST FROM THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS

A new species of testate amoebae from the genus Centropyxis found in the upper organogenic horizons of the Adak Island (Alaska) coastal soil is described. The new species is similar to Centropyxis plagiostoma but differs by the large ventral invagination and larger size.
